The Empirical Study on R&D Efficiency of High-Tech Industry in China

Hailing Zhao

Abstract—This study applies non-radial data envelopment analysis (DEA) to analyze the research and development (R&D) efficiency of 28 provinces of China during the period of 2007-2011. In addition, these 28 provinces are divided into three big regions, that is, eastern, middle and western regions. The results show that Beijing and Guangdong have relatively best R&D efficiencies and most of provinces in middle and western regions have lower efficiencies relative to those provinces in eastern region. Moreover, the gap of R&D efficiency between eastern region and middle and western regions converged at one point in 2010, but then widened again soon afterward.

Index Terms—R&D efficiency, slacks-based measure, high-tech industry.
